Kim’s Mulled Wine

Wine that warms from within

Much like the sensation from wrapping your hands around a warm coffee in the morning – mulled wine really is like an embrace. Spicy, zesty, and complex, mulled wine enhances many characteristics of your preferred red, so that it can be enjoyed in an entirely new way.

Now you may have heard that no good wine is ever worth ‘wasting’ in mulled wine, and we can promise you David isn’t urging you to pour his prized Zinfandel into such a recipe – but he has got one wine that works the perfect treat.

You may remember, like most in our region & surrounds, we were unable to produce any wines in the 2020 vintage due to the bushfires that resulted in smoke taint. This taint results from the smoke lingering in the air from dense bushfires being absorbed by the grapes and leading to a flavour in the wine, that no matter how many ways you look at it, can hardly be described as desirable. However, with a whole vintage to twiddle his thumbs, David couldn’t stand idly by and do nothing. So the trials begun.

One of these resulting trials is what we call an Australian Botanical Red, made using our ‘smokey’ grapes infused with a mix of native botanicals to balance the flavour profiles. Far from our typical wine, the resulting flavours we have found make for an ideal mulled wine as it brings a depth & complexity of flavour that is unfound elsewhere.

To honour this newfound combination, Kim has made a specific mulled wine recipe for you to enjoy at home!

Ingredients

  • 750ml Lowe 2020 Australian Botanicals Red
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1-2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 2 Star Anise
  • A few Black Peppercorns
  • Juice of 1 Orange
  • A few strips of Orange Peel
  • Optional: Pomegranate Juice or Syrup adds extra deliciousness

Method

  1. Add all your ingredients to a pot and bring to the boil
  2. Simmer for about 15 minutes
  3. Enjoy!

Tip: If you want to cook off the alcohol, you can boil your mulled wine rapidly for a few minutes. If you don’t want to do this, make sure to keep it at a simmer and not a boil.

At the Lowe Cellar Door, we then add our Mulled Wine to our old glass Cona coffee percolators to keep it warm and ready to go all day – the perfect winter glass to enjoy after your tasting with us!
